Abundance - Christina Allen
An exhibition showcasing a combination of ceramic works and collected/found objects directly referencing the uniqueness and rugged windswept beauty and bounty of The Great Australian Bight.
Christina's ceramic work for “Abundance” is of handmade slab and extrusion construction.
An adventure in 2010 where Christina rode her motorbike solo from Queensland to Albany in Western Australia via The Nullarbor Plain. This was an unforgettable sensory experience, both physical and emotional, freeing her mind and providing precious time for self-reflection. It was exhilarating, physically demanding, mentally challenging, and a time for answering her own big questions. She experienced a special solitude she can’t achieve in day-to-day life.
On a motorbike, everything is closer, and the sensory experience is very real. The fresh salty air, crystal waters and every shade of blue sky was exhilarating and inspiring. Christina had never experienced so many wildflowers growing like carpets of fiery jewels almost along the entire sanded coastline, and land that comes to an abrupt end, atop rugged cliffs and crashing waves. She saw Southern Right Whales with babies 20 metres offshore congregating, lazily playing and socializing, as if they knew she was there. The Great Australian Bight is vast and ancient, a landscape successfully balancing great strength, and fragility in tandem, and relates to our humanity. Christina recently returned to this special place and found no change and that felt good.
This exhibition was officially opened on Friday 13 January, 2023.
