What’s the story? Ivan, nicknamed Vanya, has been running his late sister Anna's potato farm in Ireland most of his life, along with his niece Sonia, and Michael, the local alcoholic doctor she's unrequitedly in love with. Sonia's father Alexander, a once-lauded but now largely irrelevant film director, has been living off the farm's profits for decades, but has now retired and come to live there. He has brought with him his eccentric habits, as well as his beautiful but idle new wife Helena - who has caught the doctor's eye.

Andrew Scott is a much acclaimed actor having starred in a diverse array of projects across film, radio, television and theatre. He is currently to be seen in the film All of Us Strangers. Other film credits include 1917, Spectre, Denial, Alice Through the Looking Glass and Pride. On television he won the BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance as Moriarty in Sherlock. Other television credits include his role as the ‘hot priest’ in Fleabag, as well as Black Mirror, His Dark Materials, The Hollow Crown and Netflix’s Ripley. Andrew is also a celebrated stage actor - most recently playing Garry Essedine in Noël Coward’s Present Laughter at The Old Vic, for which he won Best Actor at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards, broadcast by NT Live in 2019. In November 2023 Andrew again won the Evening Standard Theatre Award for Best Actor for his performance in Vanya.
