Directed by Wim Wenders and Japan’s entry for the 2024 Oscars, this gentle drama features an amazing musical soundtrack. The film was nominated for the Palme d’Or and Koji Yakusha, the protagonist, won Best Actor at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. Hirayamo lives a simple solitary life  as a cleaner of public toilets in Tokyo. He also loves books, music and nature, especially trees – he takes photos of them. During the film, his past is slowly revealed via a series of unexpected encounters. The film highlights the importance of finding happiness in simple pleasures and the natural world – and to live in the moment – something most in present day society find very difficult. The critics were almost all positive and the film was given a 4 star rating by most of them.
